Free fatty acid is a bulk property: the acid molecules in each parcel simply add together in the combined tank. So the blend's FFA is the total acid divided by the total oil — a volume-weighted (mass-weighted) average:
FFA_blend = Σ(volume × FFA) ÷ Σ(volume)
FFA is the headline freshness and refining-loss indicator for crude palm oil, which is why contracts cap it (commonly 5% for CPO). Blending a high-FFA parcel down with fresher oil is routine — but the blend can only ever sit between the parcels' FFA values, so no amount of good oil rescues a lot that is far off spec on its own.

How do you calculate the FFA of a blend?
Free fatty acid blends linearly by weight. Multiply each parcel's volume by its FFA, add those up, and divide by the total volume. The result is the volume-weighted average FFA of the combined lot.
How much low-FFA oil do I need to add to meet spec?
Use the blend-down solver: enter your target maximum FFA and the FFA of the oil you'll add. It solves the mass-balance equation for the tonnes required — provided the added oil is below the target FFA.
Does blending fix other quality problems?
No. FFA blends predictably, but colour, iodine value, moisture, impurities and oxidation do not always average cleanly, and some are limited by the worst parcel. Always confirm the blended lot against a fresh certificate of analysis.
