1. Understanding Core Quality Specifications

Before negotiating prices, international buyers must establish strict parameter thresholds for chemical assays:

  • Free Fatty Acids (FFA): Measures hydrolysis and oil breakdown. Standard CPO contracts require FFA โ‰ค 5.0%, while refined olein requires FFA โ‰ค 0.1%.
  • Moisture & Impurities (M&I): Water and solid contaminants. Excess moisture causes rancidity during transit. Standard threshold is 0.25% max for crude, 0.1% max for refined olein.
  • Iodine Value (IV): Measures degree of unsaturation and cold-temperature stability. Standard RBD Palm Olein CP8 requires IV โ‰ฅ 57; Super Olein CP6 requires IV โ‰ฅ 60.
  • Cloud Point (ยฐC): Temperature at which clear oil turns hazy. Crucial for buyers in cooler destinations (Europe, Central Asia, North China).

2. Standard Trade Contracts & Terms (PORAM & MEOMA)

Over 80% of global palm oil shipments are executed under standard contract templates provided by the Palm Oil Refiners Association of Malaysia (PORAM) or Indonesian export guidelines:

  • FOB (Free On Board): Supplier delivers oil to vessel manifold at origin ports (Dumai, Belawan, Pasir Gudang, Port Klang). Buyer handles ocean vessel chartering and freight.
  • CIF / CFR (Cost, Insurance & Freight):Supplier arranges chartering and delivers cargo to buyer's destination port (e.g., Kandla, Mundra, Karachi, Rotterdam).
  • Quality Dispute Resolution: Third-party independent inspection certificates (SGS, Intertek, Surveyor Indonesia) at loading port are final for quantity and quality.

3. Logistics & Shipping Packaging Options

Depending on destination port infrastructure and order volumes, buyers select from three shipping methods:

๐Ÿšข Bulk Chartering

5,000 to 45,000 MT shipments via specialized chemical tankers. Best freight economics for major refiners.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Flexitanks (20ft FCL)

21.5 MT food-grade polymer bladders inside standard containers. Ideal for mid-scale buyers without deep-water berth access.

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Steel Drums / IBC Totes

190kg steel drums or 1,000L IBC totes. Best for specialty shortenings, oleochemicals, and retail packagers.

4. Payment Terms & Red Flags to Avoid

Commodity trade requires strict financial security:

  • Irrevocable LC at Sight: Standard payment mode. Issued by top-tier international banks against shipping documents (Bill of Lading, COA, Invoice, Certificate of Origin).
  • Red Flags: Suppliers demanding 100% advance wire transfers without third-party escrow or inspection certificates; prices quoted 15%+ below benchmark indexes; lack of RSPO/ISCC supply chain certification.
