The oil palm is one of the most versatile perennial crops in commercial agriculture. While crude palm oil (CPO) attracts most attention, the tree produces a wide range of useful by-products that can be sold, reused on the plantation, or converted into energy and materials. For procurement managers and first-time palm-product buyers, understanding these streams can uncover new sourcing opportunities and reduce waste-related costs.
Fresh fruit bunch components
The fresh fruit bunch (FFB) is the main harvest. After milling, it yields several distinct products and residues.
- Mesocarp – The fleshy outer layer is pressed to produce crude palm oil, used in cooking oil, margarine, shortening, and many processed foods.
- Palm kernel – Inside the nut, the kernel is crushed separately to produce palm kernel oil (PKO), a lauric oil used in confectionery, personal care, and oleochemicals, plus palm kernel cake or meal, a protein-rich animal feed ingredient.
- Empty fruit bunches (EFB) – After the fruit is stripped, the empty bunches are commonly returned to the field as mulch or compost, used as boiler fuel, or processed into fibre for erosion control and packaging materials.
Fibre, shell, and kernel by-products
Mesocarp fibre and palm kernel shells are generated during oil extraction. They are widely used as biomass fuel to generate steam and electricity for the mill, reducing reliance on external energy sources. Surplus shells can be converted into activated carbon, charcoal briquettes, or used as a lightweight aggregate in some construction applications. The fibre can also be used in paper or pulp production, though it differs from wood fibre and is usually mixed with other materials.
Fronds and trunks
Oil palm fronds are pruned regularly throughout the tree’s life. They are often chopped and left in the field as mulch to return nutrients to the soil, or collected as livestock feed in integrated farming systems. When a plantation is replanted, the old trunks are typically chipped and used for biomass energy, or processed into plywood, laminated veneer lumber, and medium-density fibreboard. In some processing systems, the trunk sap can be fermented to produce bioethanol or sugar, but this is not yet a dominant commercial route.
Mill effluent and other streams
Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is the liquid waste from processing. In conventional mills, it is treated in anaerobic ponds, where methane can be captured and used for power or heat. The treated effluent is often land-applied as a nutrient source for the plantation. Decanter solids and sludge can be composted and used as organic fertilizer.
What this means for buyers
- Beyond CPO, consider sourcing palm kernel oil, stearin and olein fractions, palm kernel cake, activated carbon, fibre-based packaging, or bioenergy co-products.
- Using by-products can lower raw material costs, reduce the waste footprint of your supply chain, and support circular economy goals.
- Verify that suppliers can trace their biomass streams and meet basic environmental and social standards, even for non-oil products.
The oil palm’s value extends far beyond the oil. By recognising all the usable outputs, buyers can turn what might be seen as waste into a source of practical, commercial value.
