The oil palm is a perennial tropical tree, not an annual field crop. It photosynthesises year-round in equatorial climates, converting sunlight into fruit continuously. A mature palm can produce 10 to 15 fresh fruit bunches per year, each weighing 10 to 30 kilograms. This constant fruiting cycle, combined with the tree’s large leaf canopy for capturing sunlight, allows it to accumulate oil far more efficiently than short-season crops like soybean, which grow for only a few months per year.
Agronomic Practices
Commercial oil palm plantations use high-yielding hybrid varieties, such as tenera, which are bred for thicker mesocarp and higher oil extraction rates. Standard practices include precise spacing (about 130 to 150 palms per hectare), regular fertilisation, and pest management. These inputs maximise fruit set and oil content per bunch.
Harvesting occurs every 10 to 14 days, ensuring fruit is collected at peak ripeness. Fresh fruit bunches are processed within 24 hours to prevent free fatty acid buildup, preserving oil quality. Mills extract crude palm oil using mechanical pressing, achieving extraction rates of roughly 20 to 25 percent of bunch weight.
Comparative Land Use
Because oil palm yields more oil per hectare, it requires less land to meet the same volume of vegetable oil demand. This land-use efficiency is a key reason palm oil dominates global trade. For procurement managers, this translates into a stable, high-density supply chain from a relatively small planted area.
Practical Implications for Buyers
For first-time palm product buyers, the yield advantage means that palm oil is typically the lowest-cost vegetable oil on the market, reflecting lower land and production costs per tonne. It also implies that sourcing from certified sustainable plantations can reduce the total land footprint of your vegetable oil supply.
