Palm oil has long been one of the most volatile of the major vegetable oils, its price swings shaped by a recurring set of forces: weather, policy, energy markets, and geopolitical disruption. Understanding the big episodes helps explain why the trade behaves as it does today.

The early shocks: war and shortage

The first major modern price shock came during the Second World War, when Japanese occupation of Southeast Asia cut off the main supply routes to Europe and the Americas. With plantations in Malaya and the Dutch East Indies under military control, global supplies collapsed and prices rose sharply. The post-war recovery was slow, and it was not until the 1960s that production regained momentum, driven by new planting in Malaysia and Indonesia.

A second notable episode occurred in the mid-1970s, when a combination of poor weather in the region and a broader commodity boom pushed prices to record levels. The oil crisis of 1973-74, which raised energy costs and encouraged substitution into vegetable oils, amplified the move. The 1998 El Niño spike

Perhaps the most dramatic single shock came in 1997-98, when a severe El Niño event brought drought and haze to much of Southeast Asia. The dry conditions cut yields sharply in Malaysia and Indonesia, just as demand from emerging economies was rising. Prices more than doubled within months, and the episode underscored how vulnerable the crop is to climate variability. It also highlighted the role of fire, as land-clearing practices worsened the haze and drew international criticism.

The 2008 food and fuel crisis

The next major shock was part of the global food price crisis of 2007-08. A combination of rising crude oil prices, a push for biofuels, and poor harvests in several regions drove all vegetable oils higher. Palm oil, as the largest and most traded of them, moved in tandem, reaching record levels in early 2008 before crashing as the financial crisis took hold. The episode revealed how closely palm oil tracks crude oil, both as a substitute in energy markets and as a cost input for production and shipping.

The 2015-16 El Niño repeat

A second major El Niño in 2015-16 produced a similar but less extreme shock. Dry weather again cut yields, and prices rose through 2016. This time, however, the market was more prepared, with larger stocks and better forecasting. The episode confirmed that while the triggers repeat, the industry's ability to absorb them has improved.

The 2022 conflict-driven surge

The most recent major shock came in 2022, when Russia's invasion of Ukraine disrupted sunflower oil exports and drove global demand toward palm oil. At the same time, Indonesia imposed export restrictions to protect domestic supplies, tightening the market further. Prices spiked to record levels before easing as supply chains adjusted. The episode showed how a conflict in one region can ripple through the entire vegetable oil complex.

What the history teaches

Across these episodes, a few patterns stand out. Weather remains the dominant supply-side driver, with El Niño the most consistent trigger. Energy prices matter, both through biofuel demand and input costs. And policy interventions, whether export bans or biofuel mandates, can amplify or dampen moves. For traders and producers, the lesson is that palm oil's price is never purely a function of its own fundamentals; it sits at the intersection of climate, energy, and geopolitics.
